Music, teaching and a lot of curiosity.

I’m a music producer and educator based in Scotland. I’ve spent much of my working life helping people make sense of technology and use it for something they care about.

I’ve always liked getting absorbed in how things work. Years ago, that meant documenting guitars, amps and pedals on Guitar / Strings / Electricity. These days, AI has given me a whole new set of things to explore.

Penman Labs is where I keep that exploration: projects I’ve directed with coding tools, small changes that helped someone, and experiments I’ve paused or simplified.

My part in the work

I decide what the system needs to do, work through the awkward details, test what the AI produces and correct it when it misses the point. Tools such as Claude Code and Codex produce code under that direction.

A clear line around the music

I make music with Other People’s Leisure. I created the OPL website with Codex. I do not use AI to compose or produce our music. Spud, our Hermes-based assistant, helps with OPL’s administration. My interest in future video-editing and visual-workflow experiments is separate from making the music.

Where this might lead

I’m exploring opportunities in AI adoption and enablement, and the possibility of building something of my own. I’m interested in useful work, a good team and helping people feel more capable with the technology.
